Middle: Years 7 to 10 - Rooms 12 to 16
“The Middle years represent a time of huge change for students, in terms of academic performance, social responsibility, behavioural expectations and their physical maturity. Our aim is to manage these changes as effectively as possible, navigating this journey in a way that prepares them for the challenges of Year 11, and beyond.”
Year 7
Here, we continue the Junior School’s homeroom approach, although our two homeroom teachers share the responsibility of teaching Reading, Writing and Mathematics. Additionally, students take PE, Maori Language and Art throughout the year, with trimester ‘taster’ courses in: Digital Technologies, Food Technology and Music.
Year 8
In Year 8 students study Integrated Studies (Inquiry) in their Homeroom, but swap rooms and teachers for English and Mathematics. They take PE and Maori Language throughout the year, with trimester ‘taster’ courses in: Hard Materials Technology, Workshop/Electronics and Art.
Year 9
In Year 9, students gather each morning in three Tutor Groups. During the day they study in two mixed ability classes, where they have subject-specialist teachers for all of their lessons. Integrated Studies covers the curriculum areas of English and Social Studies. PE and Health are also taught throughout the year as core subjects. Additionally, students take 13 week ‘taster’ courses in Maori Culture, Graphics, Music, Workshop/Electronics, Art, Digital Technologies, Hard Materials Technology and Food Technology.
Year 10
At Year 10, there are also two classes, and students again have subject-specialist teachers for all of their lessons. Integrated Studies (English & Social Studies), Mathematics, Science, PE and Health, are taught throughout the year as core subjects. Additionally, students choose up to four semester options which may include: Maori Language, Graphics, Music, Art, Digital Technology, Hard Materials Technology, Automotive, and Food Technology. Students study two options in each half of the academic year. Some choose to study two semesters of the same option.
