ONEWHERO AREA SCHOOL - 23rd February 2024

Principal's Message:

Kia ora e te whaanau,

This fortnight we had our first group of international students arrive for a short visit. The group enjoyed spending time in our classes and getting to know New Zealand culture. As well as teaching our students about diversity and providing them with opportunities to learn about other cultures, we also are able to provide resources for our students that we otherwise wouldn’t have. The money from our international students is currently helping us to pay for covering half the courts. Thank you to our homestay parents for your support of our international student program, you play a vital role in supporting our international students while they are here. If you wish to sign up to be a homestay parent, please contact Anke,

We held our first conference evening at the marae this week with an informal meet and greet event. Thank you to those that made it, it was a beautiful afternoon. We will review this event and make slight changes for next year. The second night for 1:1 conferences is next week on 27th. Please make sure you book if you wish to come.

This week we held our annual swimming sports and tabloids. Well done to all the students who participated in the events. We are very fortunate to have swimming pools at our school and it’s great to see so many students making the most of the opportunities. It was also great to see parents and whaanau come along to cheer on their children throughout the day. Congratulations to all those who have made it through to their next level of competition, we know you will represent our school with pride in the coming weeks.

We are currently advertising our second out of zone ballot, which is for a Term 2 start. If you know of people that are interested in applying please point them to the school website to locate the application form. Applications need to be at the office no later than Tuesday 19th March 2024.

We hope you enjoy the rest of the week

Message From The Board:

Teenaa koutou katoa,

As we kick off the 2024 year, the Board wishes to welcome our newest board member Graham Paton who has been co-opted onto the board with a specialist skill set in Health and Safety, property procurement and policy work. It is great to have him join our team. Our members are:
Rebecca Bills (Tuumuaki/Principal), Gayle Bovill (Staff representative), Johanna Tapia (Student representative), Aroha Kukutai (Whaanau representative), Corinne Anderson (Parent representative), Derwyn Fail (Parent representative), Graham Paton (Co-opted representative) Owein Greaves (Parent representative), Shelley Bradley (Deputy chairperson, parent representative) and myself, Amie Morgan (Presiding member, parent representative).

Our school website has a board section where you can find our strategic plan, board minutes, meeting dates and contact details. This is also where you can access our school policies and procedures. Our primary objective in governing our kura/school is to ensure that “every student at OAS is able to attain their highest possible standard in educational achievement

We do this through monitoring and evaluating our school data, policy reviews, developing and following our strategic plans and managing school resources. This year we have planned our community consultation mid-year, which is an opportunity for you to give feedback on how we are doing. Whaanau participation is vital to our kura/school and Board to support the direction we take.

The Board has focused the start of the year on governance training, and PB4L professional development as we have a lot of new members. This work ensures we are a collaborative team, doing the mahi behind the scenes, supporting our principal to meet our goals and objectives for 2024. We are looking forward to an uninterrupted year of schooling for Rangatahi to be the best they can be.

After School Drama

Our After School Drama Programme for 2024 will be commencing in two weeks’ time. Any students wishing to join the group can pick up a permission slip from the office. These forms will need to be filled out and returned to school before the start of our first session on Monday 4th of March.

After School Drama is open to all students from throughout the school aged eight years old and above. The group will meet in the Learning Hub on Monday afternoons from 3pm to 4.30pm. The programme will involve students in activities that encourage them to develop their drama skills, and to explore ideas using drama as a form of creative expression. The group will help write and rehearse three short plays that will be performed as part of The Arts and Culture Evening during Term Three.
