ONEWHERO AREA SCHOOL - 9th February 2024

Principal's Message:

Kia ora e te whaanau,

Welcome back everyone to the 2024 school year. We would like to welcome all our new families to our school community, it is lovely to have you join us. Also welcome to Anthea Smith our new school secretary and Donna Allely, who many of you already know, who has joined our staff as a music teacher.

The start of the year has seen a focus on displaying the school values every day. Our Year 9 and 10 students had their first day as an expectation and team building day, completing a range of activities with our Year 9 and 10 teachers. In the rest of the school teachers have been running lessons on building class treaties (class expectations) to set us up well for a productive year.

Our staff also started the year connecting and discussing how the elements of Hauroa can be applied in their own lives but also in their teaching. We were privileged to have Matua Denis, and Whaea Rereokeroa join us at the marae to share the history of the whenua and marae. We also participated in some team building activities down on the river.

On the 19th and 27th of February we have our first conferences/meet the teacher meetings. In our feedback from the community last year there was a clear need to cater for two different types of conferences. Half of the community wanted a more casual meet and greet style meeting, which was especially important for parents who had multiple children. The other half of the community wanted the more traditional conference, one to one with the teacher. This year we are trying something different in a response to this feedback. Our first night, 19th of February, we are taking off site to provide an informal event. This will be held at Te Kotahitanga Marae from 3:30 to 5:30. No bookings needed, all welcome, just turn up and connect with staff, afternoon tea will be provided. The second night will be at school with booked sessions, the code for booking will be out shortly. If neither of these options work for you, please make sure you contact the classroom teacher/ whaanau teacher to arrange a separate time, this can be done face to face, on the phone, or online.

Throughout the year we have many school events, the events are loaded onto the community calendar as soon as the date is decided. This calendar can be accessed through the school app and on the school website, scroll to the bottom of the home page to view the calendar. We also have an events section in the newsletter so you can keep up to date with what is happening.

We hope you enjoy the rest of the week
