ONEWHERO AREA SCHOOL - 11th August 2023

Principal's Message:

Kia ora e te whaanau,

This fortnight has been another busy one with many highlights to celebrate. Our annual cross country was held on Friday. It was fantastic to see so many parents and community members lining the final straight as they supported our students running to the finish line. A particular highlight was to see so many students giving the run a go regardless of whether running was their strength. The house pride and school spirit on display created a fantastic event. Even the teachers got involved with some of them running with the students and encouraging participation. This event was supported by our community, and the school would like to especially thank the Cathcarts whaanau and the Onewhero Fire Brigade. Without their support this event would not have been possible.

Last Friday also saw the release of our community survey. This survey is a check in to see how we are going against the strategic plan. It’s very important that we hear from as many of our whaanau as possible. If you have not already completed the survey please take the time to do so, your feedback is hugely important for planning for next year. Anyone who completes the survey is eligible to go into the draw to win a food hamper. You can use the link here to access the survey: https://forms.gle/ezcEHaTMEehJ71Xd7, or if you are in the office there are QR codes you can scan that will take you straight to it. For those that prefer paper versions, we will be sending paper copies home next week, these can be returned to the office.

Last week we reviewed our attendance processes to meet the Ministry of Education’s new guidelines for attendance. This process will be emailed out at the end of the week. The key change to be aware of is that there will be closer monitoring of students who have 5 days or more unjustified absences in a term. Unjustified absences are any absence that doesn’t meet the Ministry requirements. This does not include sickness, tangi/bereavement, or absence due to circumstances that are exceptional i.e. bus breakdown etc. The day to day contact for absences remains the same, however we would like to stress the importance of letting us know why a student is absent, to ensure it is classified correctly. If you have any questions around attendance, please get in touch with myself or one of the deputy principals.

We have been informed of some significant student successes this week. The school would like to acknowledge Haydon Danford who has made the New Zealand Barbarians Area Schools Rugby Team. Haydon will be competing in a tournament in September. We also acknowledge Joe Thackham who has been selected for the Counties under 18 rugby squad for 2023 and Josh Payne who has been selected for Counties under 16 squad.
We are enormously proud of these boys and their dedication to their sport. We also acknowledge our first XV who have made it into the semi finals, which are to be played at Onewhero Rugby Grounds at 12pm on Saturday. We encourage our community to come along and support the joint team with Tuakau College. We also thank the teams coaches, managers, and sponsors who are doing a fabulous job and supporting the boys to perform at their best.

The 2024 out of zone enrolment process starts this week, so if you know of families wanting to come to Onewhero Area School next year, please let them know. We also ask that any in zone enrolments also be completed so that we can begin to plan for next year. We are holding an open evening on the 31st of August at 6:30pm. Any whaanau interested in attending the school are welcome to come along and find out more about our school. The evening will have a short presentation, followed by a tour of the school, and then a light supper with informal opportunities for questions and answers.

This Monday we launched our PB4L focus on kindness. This focus has come from the students who have voiced they would like to change the way students speak to each other. In classes we are doing lessons on the effect put downs have on people and especially that saying ‘just jokes’ doesn’t make the put down ok. We would appreciate your support on this topic by talking with your child/children about showing kindness with the words they choose to use. Teachers will be using waka card clicks to encourage kindness and having mini chats to help students understand why put downs are not ok.

Lastly I would like to thank all the parents that attended student conferences this term. We had almost half of all our parents attend over the two nights which is a massive improvement. If you were unable to attend the evening, staff will be contacting you to organise a time that suits you to connect and discuss your child’s learning.

Have a great weekend,

Ngaa mihi,

Rebecca Bills

School Cross Country 2023

Last Friday we held our annual school Cross Country. The students turned up ready to run hard and have some fun as they navigated the swamp and farmland. We had a fantastic turnout of parents and whaanau who cheered from the sidelines as the students ran the final straight. The swamp was extra muddy this year with all the rain we have had, and the students had a great time.
Thank you to everyone who came along to support the event, a special thanks to Alan Rowe as our amazing First Aider and the crew from the Onewhero Fire Brigade who hosed the kids down at the end. Thank you also to Cathcart Whaanau who allow our students to run through their farm. Your support is hugely appreciated.

Please see the results below for all our amazing runners.
