| | | | Principal's Message: The last couple of weeks have seen some great successes for our students. Joe Thackham presented his business project to the Young Enterprise judging panel. The panel were very impressed with Joe’s idea and three of the judges approached Joe as he was leaving to ask if they could purchase his project.

Some of the Year 7 and 8 students planted daffodil bulbs in the domain behind the rugby club. This work is part of our partnership with Waikato Regional Council and the Onewhero Domain Board. Some of the students were excited to see the bulbs we helped plant last year starting to come up.
|
Last week I visited some classrooms and chatted with the students about their learning. The trade and make unit currently being done in Years 1-8 has been a great success with the students. They were eager to tell me about their projects and share their financial literacy skills. The Year 1-8 collaborative planning has encouraged discussions in the playground as students from the different year levels share their ideas with each other.
|
The music students showcased their talent last week with a lunchtime performance on the art deck. Some of these students played at the Pukekohe Library a few weeks ago. The talented bunch did a mixture of group and solo performances while their peers sat on the field and listened. We hope to have more performances like this throughout the year. Well done to all those involved and to the staff that supported.

Janette Eveleigh is retiring at the end of the term. Janette has been at OAS for 10 years. We would like to thank Janette for her contribution to our school and wish her all the best as she gets to spend more time with her grandchildren.

| | Hockey News Top of the table and unbeaten Waiuku out played by valiant Onewhero Fast 5. |
A great game that was played within the spirit of our School values. Stellar goalkeeping from Cameron Vickers, amazing saves, excellent communication and decisive decision making. Backed up by our solid defenders; Tyler Nicholson who has the best reverse pass in the business and first year player Conner James, who gets better every match. Experienced player Vanna Johnston had another impressive match, her passes were accurate and her running tireless. Adam Kelly had a great first third until a hit to his knee kept him from the field. But in true fashion, he played the last third and was instrumental in the win, courageous. Aaron Watson took on the role of senior player, organising the team, applying pressure and quality passing. Jacob Holmes continues to impress, he has amazing stick control, awareness of space and scored our first goal to really apply the pressure on the top team. Faith Gilchrist is new to the team this year, but not hockey. She is a seasoned player, with great skill and tenacity. Our second goal was a special finish requiring a brave player and a deft touch to clear the advancing keeper, well done Faith.
|
The most impressive thing about our team is how they conduct themselves on the pitch, true ambassadors for our school.

| INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS 2023 Onewhero Area School is getting ready to once again welcome short term International Student Groups to our school after three years of Covid. |
This is an exciting opportunity for our students as well as for the whole community to learn about different cultures, games, food etc through connection and friendships. We host groups from 6 to 30 students at a time, from four days to 6 weeks.
|
For these exchanges to go ahead, we need host families that are wanting to open their hearts and homes to these students and show them our kiwi way of life. Homestay families will be compensated for their costs and effort ($280 per student per week or $40 per night). We try to host students 2 per family, but sometimes there might also be single placements. |
If you are keen to host, you need to be able to offer them a room with a bed, desk etc and provide meals and transport to and from school. (School busses may be an option) You need to treat them as part of your family.
|
Interested families will need to be police vetted under the vulnerable children's act, and approved by the school. By hosting these students, you will be part of our homestay families group and be invited to cultural parties etc. It is a great way to connect with likeminded families and a fantastic way for your children to learn about other cultures. Most International students love interacting with young children and playing games with them. |
Full support will be given from our International Student coordinator.
|
We are keen to hear from families, couples and singles who may be keen to be part of this! |
